Saturday State News Briefs: Fire damage contained at Hormel plant in Beloit
BELOIT - Damage is estimated at $50,000 in an explosion and fire at the Hormel Foods meat plant in Beloit. No one was hurt.
Fire officials said an air compressor exploded in a boiler room – and it started a fire that took about 15 minutes to put out. Units were called yesterday afternoon. When they arrived, smoke was coming from the back of the Hormel plant – and employees were in the process of evacuating. Fire-fighters got help from plant workers who were trained in using fire extinguishers. The fire department calls such training valuable – and in this case, it saved what it called a “large value property.”

A Greenfield man is charged with drunken driving for a fifth offense. The most recent charge against 50 year old Daryl Paradowski came when he was checked when he showed up for a meeting with a case manager monitoring his sobriety. Paradowski had a blood alcohol concentration of point-12 when he was tested last week. The court had ordered him to maintain complete sobriety. Paradowski was thrown in the Milwaukee County Jail and had his bail raised from $1,800 to $6,800.

A 24 year old babysitter is charged with killing a four-month girl she was supposed to be caring for. Jeanette Janusiak told investigators the girl was fine after she dropped her and became unresponsive later. A doctor disputed her version of events, saying due to the severity of her injuries, the infant would have become unresponsive immediately. A Reedsburg police officer was called to Janusiak's home early Thursday. He performed CPR until paramedics arrived and took her to the hospital. She was flown to a Madison hospital where she died. The girl reportedly had suffered three skull fractures and other injuries. Janusiak is scheduled to make an appearance in Sauk County Court Monday.
