London riots: Guerrilla warfare erupts as no one knows where mob will strike next

Parts of London that had been unscathed during the previous two nights of looting and arson were suddenly exposed to the full force of highly mobile mobs of youths intent on battling the police. On high streets across the city shopkeepers and residents prepared themselves for the attacks and attempted to protect their property and themselves.

Hundreds of youths smashed shop windows, vandalised a bus and threw bottles and other missiles at lines of police. Later the police were forced to turn and flee as gangs of youths wearing hoods, masks and balaclavas swarmed up side streets hurling flaming logs, bricks and bottles. Barricading the roads with burning wheelie bins, they armed themselves with shards of glass.

Dozens of looters smashed the windows of an off licence on the same street and were seen throwing wads of cash from the till into the crowd outside. Masked youths emerged with their arms full of spirit bottles. Rioters were seen using the flames from burning wheelie bins to light cigarettes they had stolen from a looted off licence. Bottles of stolen whisky and vodka were being swigged amid the carnage.

Police were just 200 yards away as the gangs broke into a Carhartt fashion store, which was emptied within 10 minutes.

A red sports car was set alight in nearby Ellingfort Road, while dustbins were seen also burning in the street as two people lay injured in the road.

A police officer could also be seen lying on the ground after being struck on his shield by a missile. Other officers created a cordon around him while he was treated by colleagues.

Fr Rob Wickham, the Rector of Hackney, took to the streets to try to speak to some of the people involved in the disorder. He said the riot started in his churchyard at St John's when the police made an arrest and somebody threw a brick in response.

"The majority of people are saying it's a bad day for Hackney and it's shocking to see," Fr Wickham said.
