Trouble in Troy: 'Pen Melts Down in Brooklyn's Latest Loss to ValleyCats

By John Torenli

Entering last night’s series finale with Tri-City in Troy, N.Y., the suddenly struggling Cyclones had to be wondering exactly what they had to do to vanquish the ValleyCats.

The team that swept Brooklyn out of the New York-Penn League Championship Series nearly a year ago has jumped into the role of spoiler this summer too, putting a serious crimp in the Baby Bums’ playoff plans.

The defending champs, who are suffering through a disappointing follow-up campaign to their storied title run in 2010, delivered a gut punch to Brooklyn’s formidable relief corps Wednesday night at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium, pulling out a 7-4 victory by scoring five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The loss dropped the Cyclones 4 ½ games behind first-place Staten Island (40-24) in the McNamara Division with 11 to play, but Brooklyn (35-28) remained only one game back of Williamsport (37-28) in the Wild Card chase with Mahoning Valley (35-29) 1½ games off the pace.

The Cyclones entered the stretch run playing their best ball of the season, winning eight of nine games, including the final two of a four-game set with Staten Island earlier this month.

But the ValleyCats ended the hot streak by blanking Brooklyn, 3-0, at MCU Park last Saturday night before taking three of the next four meetings — all by identical 7-4 scores.

Wednesday’s loss was particularly galling because it came as the result of an uncharacteristic collapse from the Cyclones’ most reliable unit: the bullpen.

After Brooklyn erased a two-run deficit with a pair of runs in both the fifth and seventh innings, starter Carlos Vazquez handed the ball to previously undefeated All-Star reliever Todd Weldon (4-1). Vazquez limited the ’Cats to two runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts over six strong innings, only to watch Weldon get charged with a season-high four runs on a hit and three walks in a disastrous eighth.

Charles City fireworks moving after accident - KWWL.com - News ...

CHARLES CITY (AP) -- The annual Fourth of July fireworks show in Charles City is moving after last year's accident that injured dozens of spectators.

The City Council on Monday agreed to move the display from downtown to a city-owned waste disposal site on the east side of town.

Last summer, 37 people were injured during the fireworks display in a downtown parking lot. State investigators say the initial explosion was likely caused when a shell malfunctioned, sending a fireball into the crowd.

Veronica Litterer, the city's community development director, recommended the new site for safety reasons. She also says a new location was needed because a gas station is being built on the former site.
