Salem City getting ready for its annual Market Street Day on Saturday
SALEM — One of the biggest celebrations of the year here in the City of Salem is set to take place this weekend, guaranteeing to deliver a day of fun, history and community pride to the area. The 37th Annual Market Street Day celebration, sponsored by the Salem Committee, Inc., will be held on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., along Market Street and Broadway. The event is expected to take place regardless of any bad weather brought by Hurricane Irene.
According to City Councilwoman Karen Tuthill, who is a member of the Salem Committee, Inc., Market Street Day represents an important day for people throughout the county to come see what Salem has to offer.
“It’s the largest event of the year for the City of Salem,” said Tuthill. “I really think the reason that it’s so successful is that it not only brings the community together here in the city, but also those in neighboring towns have the chance to come and visit us to see what’s new.”
Vendors for food, antiques, and crafts will be on hand Saturday for the event, and Salem’s rich history will be on display in the Salem County Historical Society and the Salem Fire Department Museum.
Also featured this year will be a judged contest of antique and exhibition cars — though with a newly added twist, said Tuthill.
“New this year will be a ‘car cruise,’ which will take place after the presentation of trophies,” she said. “It will basically be a parade of all the cars entered in the car show.”
Other notable Market Street Day events will include: A show with sales and appraisals through the Mullica Hill Doll Study Club, held at the First Presbyterian Church; a blowout sale hosted by the Salem High School Booster Club on SHS clothing; and live music entertainment in the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park throughout the day.
