Today's road work update

Crews have begun resurfacing River Drive in Davenport from Marquette to Iowa streets. Beginning today after the morning rush hour, westbound traffic will be detoured off River Drive onto 4th Street and eastbound traffic will be detoured off at Marquette Street to 3rd Street. The cross streets to the Casino, Union Station, the Farmers Market, Modern Woodmen Park and Skate Park will be open and all downtown businesses will have full access.

Other road projects that could have an effect on your driving this morning:

• Crews have closed the right-hand, Illinois-bound lane of the Interstate 74 bridge over the Mississippi River. The State and Grant street ramps are also closed. Drivers will need to merge left and should be prepared for some delays in the work zones. Traffic control being used for the project includes a “zipper” or “late-lane merge system,” similar to the process used earlier on the Iowa-bound bridge repair project.

During periods of high traffic volume, a series of signs will display messages informing drivers to use both lanes and stay in their own lane until the merge point, which will be identified with signage stating: “Take Your Turn — Merge Here.”

This stage of work is scheduled to be completed by Labor Day weekend. The next stage of the work will require the left-hand Illinois-bound lane to be closed for about seven days beginning after Labor Day.

The bridge repair project is expected to be complete by October.

An Iowa lieutenant's love interest… in Union blue « Cenantua's Blog

. While I have no knowledge of my ancestors of opinions on these stories, I always find it fascinating to read through the same lines as most likely read more ... but my reading is backlit using a microfilm reader, and a very different perspective, some 150 years (give or take a few years, depending on when the article was published) after the fact.

I wonder, for example, they may have thought about the story that appeared on the front page, Sept. 4, 1861 (and yes, I know, this is not normally a paths through which I travel in positions here, but ...).

An Iowa Girl Discovered in Soldiers’ Costume – Romantic Story, Very.

The war now prevailing in this once great and glorious country has already given rise to many strange and romantic adventures, but nothing more interesting than the following has as yet been made known to us. The facts are these: Early Wednesday morning some of the police officers at the Central Station discovered a young soldier passing on the opposite side of the street. The young soldier’s step was very elastic, complexion fair, and hands small and rather delicate. These little circumstances excited the suspicion of the policemen; and following the young soldier a square or two, they deemed it proper to take him into custody. – He gave his name as Charles H. Williams, and seemed somewhat surprised, and not a little indignant at being thus interfered with. He explained that he was merely on his way to the Republican office to obtain a copy of that highly interesting newspaper. This fact the policemen were ready to admit was well calculated t show that the young soldier had excellent judgement and discretion, but nevertheless, they were of the firm conviction that the fair complexion, the delicate hands and various other interesting et ceteras which they had observed about the young soldier, where [were] not wholly of the masculine order.
