Sportman's Expo is today at fairgrounds
SAN BENITO — Shotgun blasts and the aroma of barbecue will loom over the city today as sportsmen and women and chefs compete in a skeet shootout and cook-off.
The Cameron County Fairgrounds will be the venue for the Sportsman’s Expo that will also feature an alligator gar roundup and Market Days.
“One of the greatest things we have here in the Rio Grande Valley is the outdoors,” Zeke Padilla, president of the San Benito Chamber of Commerce, said. “We’re expecting a good turnout. We’re seeing interest from as far as Houston.”
Blake Green said he’ll join a group of co-workers from SpawGlass to form three teams to compete in the shoot-out.
“I’ve been doing this since I was able to hold a gun,” Green said. “It takes a lot of practice. That’s the way you get better.”
Men and women will square off at seven stations in teams of three, with each shooter aiming for 25 targets, ac-cording to event organizers.
Cash games include $20 for Annie Oakleys, $10 for Texas Country Doubles and $10 for flurries, a press release said.
For hunters, the contest is good practice for the upcoming dove season, Green said.
“It’s very similar to dove hunting,” he said of skeet. “When you shoot skeet, (targets) come from all directions like dove. You memorize how far to lead and how fast the bird’s going.”
For years, the city’s gar roundup has attracted bow hunters and fishermen to the annual hunt for the region’s biggest freshwater fish.
“It’s a big hit,” Padilla said. “It’s something a lot of folks here in the Rio Grande Valley enjoy doing. Everyone’s aiming for the big fish, to be the top angler.”
Trophies will go to the top three competitors in two categories: bow hunters and fishermen. The contest fea-tures a $200 cash prize for the sportsman or woman who bags the biggest catch, the press release said.
