Equipment changes work for Sanagas in John's Call
Andreas Jacobs' homebred SANAGAS (Ger) (Lomitas [GB]) didn't exactly perform like the most straightforward of animals in his American debut for Graham Motion in the July 9 Arlington H. (G3), but two key equipment changes sparked a winning turnaround in Friday's $81,000 John's Call S. at Saratoga. Making his first start as a gelding, and adding blinkers, the lightly-raced five-year-old exploded late to earn his first stakes score going away by 2 1/4 lengths. Sanagas, the fifth choice at 5-1, rattled off 1 5/8 miles on the firm turf in 2:41 2/5 and returned $13.80, $7 and $6.10.
Having raced exclusively right-handed in his native Germany, Sanagas found it difficult to adapt to going left-handed at Arlington, especially over a 1 1/4-mile trip that is relatively short for him. Although he wound up seventh, he was beaten only 3 1/4 lengths by the victorious Tajaaweed (Dynaformer), and it wasn't difficult to see him closing the gap once he figured things out.
With Rajiv Maragh back aboard, Sanagas was anchored in a ground-saving spot near the back of the pack. As the field rounded the first of three turns, the trailing Bearpath (Dynaformer) stumbled and unseated rider Frederic Lenclud. Bearpath galloped riderless down the outside of the course to the clubhouse turn, where he was subsequently apprehended by NYRA outriders.
At the head of affairs, the pedestrian pace was set by longshot Viscount (Orientate) through fractions of :24 3/5, :53 3/5, 1:16 4/5, 1:42 3/5 and 2:07. On the final turn, Kindergarden Kid (Dynaformer) and Bold Hawk (Silver Hawk) quickened in tandem, struck the front, and took their duel to midstretch.
Bold Hawk eventually put Kindergarden Kid away, but he had no answer to the fast-finishing Sanagas. Despite drifting wide on the course and ending up on the far outside, Sanagas had more than enough momentum and prevailed under wraps.
