Eating vegan in Madison

Good food is there for vegans, but sometimes hidden among the other menu items, it can be difficult to find. On my search for the best vegan food in Madison, I focused on local restaurants and menu items that are always vegan, requiring no substitutions or omissions. I also gave extra points for dishes that are unique - veggie burgers are great, but here we are looking for something special. If you are vegan, vegetarian, or just looking to incorporate more plant-based meals into your diet, here are five foods you should definitely check out.

Note: Each restaurant verified that these dishes do not contain meat, meat broth, eggs, dairy products or honey. However, revenues may change, so I advise you vegans and those with allergies or food sensitivities to always ask questions.

Sambal goreng Tempe, Bandung

Indonesian cuisine is known for its contrasting flavors and textures, and this dish is a perfect example. Sambal goreng Tempe is a sauté of fresh green beans, roasted potatoes, homemade tempeh and lemongrass in a rich savory sauce both sweet and spicy, served on white rice steamed.I ordered several times and find the green beans crisp constant, the supply of potatoes and the company and tempeh (dare I say) of meat. The sauce, thickened with candlenut and sweetened with palm sugar, is almost a sweet dessert, which could be overwhelming if not for the heat of the peppers and citrus overtones of lemon grass. If you try one dish on this list should be it.

Black beans and rice, Buraka

Buraka has four points on the vegan menu, but it's my favorite. Black beans, rice and potatoes are simmered in Ethiopian spices to form a thick and satisfying stew.The ingredients are simple, but the result is as warm and welcoming as the restaurant's deep orange and red walls. I like my food spicy and generally find restaurant menu items labeled as such mild disappointment, but not Buraka. If you order black beans and rice, be prepared to sweat a little. All dinners are served with your choice of rice or injera, a sourdough pancake Ethiopia.

If you are a vegetarian, you will love to eat this dish. The healthy delicious veggie food called Ethiopian cabbage. You can serve as main course or side meal. It is similar like salad and you can mix the ingredients based on your flavor.

Ingredients

* 3 -4 tablespoons olive oil

* 4 carrots, thinly sliced

* 1 onion, thinly sliced

* 1 teaspoon sea salt

* 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

* 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

* 1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric

* 1/2 head cabbage, shredded

* 5 potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes

Directions

In a medium skillet heat the olive over medium heat; add the carrots and onion and cook in the hot oil about 5 minutes. Add the salt, pepper, cumin, turmeric, and cabbage and cook another 15 to 20 minutes. Stir in the potatoes; cover and reduce heat to medium-low; cook 15 to 20 minutes or until potatoes are soft.
