Brothers band together for rare concert
Most jazz fans know that Chuck and Gap Mangione aren't the only brothers from the Rochester region to make great music over the years.The three La Barberas of Mount Morris, Livingston County saxophonist Pat, 67, trumpeter and big band leader John, 65, and drummer Joe, 63 have all amassed impressive concert and album credits for more than 40 years.
Among the many tunes that secured his place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was "Hound Dog" for Big Mama Thornton. When it was covered by Elvis Presley, it became a seismic event, and led them to write music, including the fabulous title tracks, for Presley's three greatest films, Loving You, Jailhouse Rock and King Creole . "Jailhouse Rock" ignited film's first great rock 'n' roll production number (and first music video). They also composed Elvis' two greatest ballads, "Don't" and "Love Me."
The teenage Phil Spector learned his trade, observing the Leiber and Stoller Drifter productions and even played lead guitar for "On Broadway."
When Ben E. King left the Drifters to go solo, Leiber and Stoller continued to write for him and produce his records. They helped King secularize an old hymn to make "Stand By Me." They also wrote its elegant flip side, "On the Horizon.
