Letter: Fire responders deserve praise, thanks

Most people here know about the fire that started at Beckett Point and ran along Discovery Bay. Our house and countless other homes were saved by the incredible efforts of many people to whom we all owe a tremendous debt of gratitude.

First: Joe D'Amico saw the smoke and flames across the bay, dropped what he was doing, said Reed Gunstone, grabbed some tools, and the two of them rushed to our house. He was able to help water the area to help keep the fire from reaching homes. We were out of town, so Joe spent the night and most of the next day be sure that we and our neighbors were "covered" until we return. Thank you, and Joe Reed. You are both really good neighbors.

Next: East Jefferson staff fire and rescue who arrived on the scene. This mix of professionals and volunteers (who are all "professionals" in our minds) are mainly trained to fight fires in the structure, but they have plunged into the fight against the cold sore. They were joined by Port Ludlow Fire & Rescue and Naval Magazine Indian Island. Finally, firefighters from as far away as Kitsap Clallam County District 3 and joined the fight. There were over 100 firefighters and other personnel working the fire at various points. Thank you all.

A special thank you to the [Department of Natural Resources] DNR crews came from all over to Washington to fight the fire. Forest fires are their main orientations and have access to equipment such as helicopters and other specialized equipment that can make a huge difference in such a fire. They took the lead and literally down the hill into the fire.Exceptional training and skills are essential for success in the fight against a wild fire. We are fortunate to have them. Thanks, MNR.

I hope all those who are "downwind" of us realize the value of all those who took part in stopping this fire. It would have been much worse if not for their efforts. The rest of our community should be grateful as well because the firecracker next campfire or discarded cigarette could start a fire in your backyard.
