Best and worst of summer golf

  My good friend and personal humorist, J.J. Patti, was killed in an auto accident in the early morning hours on the first day of that same tournament.

  It was the best and worst event of my summer at the same time.

  Then again, that's golf.

  This is a sport in which you could easily follow up an eagle on a par-5 with an 8 on a par-4. I know; I did that this summer, too.

  That's the beauty of this game. You learn to take the good with the bad and appreciate the in-between.

  Golf takes time, but what happens from tee to green is only part of the journey. The laughs, the curse words, the memories created during time spent on a golf course time are what count the most.

  That was a lesson relearned this summer.

  COLORADO PROUD: The U.S. Women's Open showcased the Broadmoor and Southern Colorado. It also showed how volatile our state's weather can be in the afternoons. Still, the very best women in the world were in our back yard for more than a week, showing off grit and determination.

  Colorado is covered the next three years with championship golf. In 2012, the U.S. Amateur will be contested at Cherry Hills Country Club; in 2013, the Solheim Cup, the women's version of the Ryder Cup, will be played at the Colorado Golf Club in Parker; and in 2014, the PGA Tour returns with the BMW Championship, a semifinal in the FedEx Cup playoffs, with Tiger and the boys heading to Cherry Hills.

  Witnessing high-caliber play on these venues is worth the price of admission, so plan accordingly.

  THE FALL GUYS: Prep golf begins this week and look for South High School to make a run at the boys Class 4A state team trophy. With Jimmy Makloski, Dominick Bregar and incoming freshman Taylor Rodriguez, the Colts should be strong.

  Not since the days of dominance by Mullen in the early 2000's has a school produced a boys state team championship just months following one by the girls. South's girls won the team title in May at Elmwood Golf Course.
