Hyderabad Universally, kart racing is considered the first step one takes in a sport whose pinnacle is Formula One or, if you are in the US, the NASCAR. Its in those tiny machines resembling hammerhead sharks that a child or a teenager gets his first feel of life in the fast lane. But there is something about go-karting that keeps attracting drivers who have moved to more powerful and glamorous race cars.For me, its the purest form of racing, says Vishnu Prasad, one of Indias brightest racing prospects at the moment. Minimal technology, uncomplicated machines, lots of overtaking, a bit of pushing and shoving all that makes it very exciting.
Prasad, 18, drives saloon cars these days and is leading the Polo-R Cup with three wins in four rounds. Nevertheless, he still takes time out to drive a kart competitively. From a racing point of view, its not a step backwards. A lot of F1 drivers also do go-karting during the off-season. It demands utmost focus. It builds your skills and also sharpens them, says Prasad, after finishing first in Round Four of the National Rotax Max Karting Championship, ahead of Ameya Bafna.
Starting second in the pre-final of the senior category, Prasad gave a nearly flawless performance to finish on the top step of the podium. Everything went right for me this weekend. I was happy with my kart and had the pace to be in front. The final was very close, but I managed to stay in front. It was fun, he says.

Meanwhile, Jehan Daruvala of Mumbai comfortably won the junior category ahead of Krishnaraj Mahadik and Arjun Maini. Mainis younger brother Kush won the micro class.
