Ocean Lakes' top recruit is a 'man amongst boys'

Eli Harold arrives early for church each Sunday.

Dressed sharply in a suit and tie, he climbs out of his car, but he doesn’t go inside St. Stephen’s Church of God in Christ. Instead, he walks about a quarter-mile down Beautiful Street. There, at the church’s cemetery, he stands alone silently to pay respect to his biggest fan.

His mother, Sheila K. Harold, died Jan. 2 after a three-year bout with cancer.

“I go there every single time I go to church,” said the Ocean Lakes senior, who is one of the nation’s top high school football recruits. “I go back there to the grave and just reflect on the good times we shared. But I’m not sad because I know she’s in heaven. I go there to show her my love and to let her know how much I miss her.”

Harold was 16 when his mother died, and there are days when he can’t comprehend why she’s gone. Other days, he wishes he could speak to her or hold her tight.

“She meant the world to me,” Harold, 17, said. “She taught me the ways of life. My dad wasn’t there, so she played the role of mother and father because my father was never a part of my life. One of the things I will always remember is she taught me how to respect people. If you do that then they will respect you.”

Harold, 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, has earned respect on the football field. A feared defensive end, he is South Hampton Roads’ top recruit in the class of 2012.

Harold, who committed to Virginia earlier this month, is ranked among the top 60 recruits nationally by several recruiting analysts, and Rivals lists him as the No. 2 prospect in the state behind Joel Caleb of Clover Hill High in Midlothian.
