Koh: Reform creating 'public health history'
“When I’m asked what does the Affordale Care Act offer to the American public, I say it offers better care, better insurance so people can get better care, and prevention and public health so people don’t get sick in the first place,” Koh said.
In his professional practice, Koh previously saw his own patients struggle with health care, either because they were “extremely poor,” lacked insurance, or even discriminated against through racial stereotypes.
“It wasn’t a system that our patients deserved even though we, as physicians and providers, were trying the best we possibly could,” he said.
“Now, I feel like I am living through public health history.”
Signed into law on March 23, 2010, the Affordable Care Act has already extended medical benefits for young adults to age 26, provided health insurance tax credits to small businesses, and provided insurance to the uninsured who had pre-existing medical conditions.
On Jan. 1, 2014, more changes come into effect with nationwide affordable insurance exchanges.
Koh said health care reform passed in Massachusetts in 2006, and such exchanges brought the level of uninsured individuals as low as 2 percent. Nationally, he said, the goal is to offer insurance to up to 96 percent of the population in the coming years through cooperation with leaders at the state level.
In addition, the law will eliminate annual limits on insurance coverage and stop discrimination based on pre-existing conditions and gender in 2014, according to www.healthcare.gov .
Improvements to the system as a whole will continue through a spirit of collaboration and education, Koh said.
“We know we can make people healthier if we do this together,” he said.
That mission is one taken to heart by the Wright Center, a medical education source with offices in Scranton, Jermyn, and Clarks Summit.

Many Americans, including people on Medicare, can now access preventive services for free, while insurance companies are being held accountable for spending the majority of premium dollars on care, not on advertising and bonuses.
