TIMES COLONIST: Tsawout First Nation holds fundraiser to build new ...

Tsawout First Nation is $500,000 short of the funds needed to build a new longhouse, but the ground will be blessed next week and construction will start shortly because the community needs a cultural heart, says Eric Pelkey, co-ordinator of the longhouse society.

The 23-year-old longhouse burned to the ground two years ago. Since then, many of the cultural programs which instil traditional values have ceased.

“Through the winter months, a lot of our traditional teachings occur and it has left a gaping hole,” Pelkey said. “The longhouse is the place of rebirth for people who want to come back to our culture and those people have nowhere to go.”

A public fundraiser will be held Saturday in the gymnasium at 7728 Tetayut Road, with a salmon feast starting at 5 p.m. followed by singing and dancing and an art auction. Celebrated carver Doug LaFortune has pledged to donate an original item, Pelkey said.

Admission is $20 for adults and $5 for children under 12. The aim is to raise between $5,000 and $10,000.
