Hunger Games, Harry Potter spawn an exhibit, lesson plans and scholarly work

November 14, 2011—With today's release of the official Hunger Games movie trailer and with the recentDVD  release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, part 2 adult fans of children's literature and movies have finally gotten their due. While these stories appeal to the young adult set, more and more adult consumers of the franchises are finding ways to bring the mythical themes of these stories to the world of education. Of late, there have been lesson plans created using Hunger Games and HPDH2 and there is a Harry Potter an exhibit on tour. The advantage of that these activities give to parents and educators is that they give them an opportunity to talk about some of the themes that the books and films bring up, including war, sacrifice, societal conflicts, scientific discovery and psychology.

Scholarly work involving Harry Potter or The Hunger Games

According to NewsLeader.com , psychology Professor Louise Freeman has written quite a bit about the Harry Potter world and has applied it to the field of psychology. For her, creatures like the Dementors are not so unfamiliar. The the monstrous entities in the Harry Potter series provide a useful analogy for depression. She's also considering doing a larger project comparing the violence present in the two children's/ young adult books and films. Both film franchises explore themes of war, prejudice and the crumbling of society, giving kids and young adults the opportunity to explore those themes.
