Q & A: D62′s Westerhold talks new programs, renovations
Superintendent Jane Westerhold: Following pilot programs at North, South, and Terrace during the 2010-2011 school year, second grade students will take the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Assessment. Until this school year, third- through eighth-grade students were MAP tested.
MAP Primary, which features computer read directions to students, if needed, more pictures, and a developmentally appropriate format, or MAP Standard will be administered to second graders.
MAP replaces the Illinois Snapshot of Early Literacy (ISEL), which was administered one-to-one. The benefits of using MAP are listed below:
Can administer to entire class at one time Data is consistent with other measures Results are more objective than ISEL scoring Students handle technology component easily Increased vertical articulation between teachers Parent reports are user friendlyFULL OPTION SCIENCE SYSTEM (FOSS) and Pearson Interactive Science materials will be piloted. Teachers were trained during the summer. Pilot teachers will meet once a month to provide feedback. A final decision will be presented to the Board of Education in the spring.
FOSS is a hands-on, inquiry-based, K-8 program. Pearson is a technology-based, K-8 program with virtual labs and full on-line access. Both programs are available in Spanish.
Technology improvements and infusion is a district priority that engages students and staff in 21st Century learning. Additional computers have been added for classroom use. The district increased the number of interactive boards and hardware, iPads, responder systems, and document cameras. There is also a focused professional development program that supports technology-use training for staff.
