Richard Hunt parked his station wagon on 31st Street early Tuesday morning and bounded out of it, wide smile on his face, eager to see his work in progress and greet his team.

Hunt, who is 75 and one of the world's foremost sculptors, had driven by himself all the way from his home in Chicago.

Even after such a trip, he beamed enough energy to power all the welding equipment at the site where his "Build a Dream" was being installed.

The team was glad to see him, too. The installation was originally set for April, but Hunt had health problems that caused him to postpone it.

Tuesday at Jefferson Avenue and 31st, he appeared fit and robust. He climbed the metal stairs that encompass three sides of the 43-inch-tall base and sprawled himself across the steps to look inside it.

"Build a Dream" will be dedicated at 10 a.m. Saturday as the city's first completed piece of a revitalized corridor for Newport News' Southeast Community. Crime and poverty are among the hardships that have dogged this section, formerly known as the East End.

Hunt's piece is on one corner of an intersection surrounded by 14 wide-open acres on its side of Jefferson Avenue, where a passing neighbor said dilapidated, old houses used to be. Across the street is another fresh-start symbol, First Baptist Church East End, a pristine, modern structure.

More than a dozen public sculptures have been installed in recent years throughout the city; Hunt is the most prominent sculptor among those commissioned. He has shown at museums and galleries throughout the country and beyond.

A dozen residents, and even the mayor, stopped by to see Hunt and ask about the art.

Mayor McKinley Price raved about the city's good fortune in landing an artist of Hunt's stature. Also, "to have such an important piece by a minority artist makes a great statement for this particular community, which is predominately minority," Price said.
