Gems from the pen of Yasmina Reza

She is not the most prolific playwright; her major success Art debuted in 1994 and she has only written four plays since (but six novels, it must be said).

But her plays are worth waiting for. Most notable have been Life x 3 and last year's God of Carnage, which was produced by both the Sydney and Melbourne Theatre Companies.

God of Carnage was a crackling play (and a Tony Award winner on Broadway) and performed with great wit and verve by stellar casts in both cities here. Roman Polanski is adapting it for film with Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly, Cristoph Waltz and Kate Winslet. Due to Polanski's persona non grata in the US, Paris is again the setting (the locale was moved to Brooklyn for the Broadway production). The cast is enticing but I'm not sure Polanski has the wit to do justice to the play.

Anyway, Reza has adapted another of her stage works, A Spanish Play, as the feature film Chicas, which is released on DVD this week (PG, Icon, 84 min, $39.95).

She dedicates the thin family drama to her mother, which is some surprise given the devious maternal behavior of the film's lead character, Pilar (played by Spaniard Carmen Maura).

A Sunday lunch introducing her daughters -- successful actress Nuria (Emmanuelle Seigner) and struggling actress Aurelia (Valerie Dreville) -- to her boyfriend of two months, Fernand (Andre Dussollier), turns into the disaster one might imagine, as a third sister, Christal (Christelle Tual), observes from afar while enjoying her own affair.

Reza explores the catty, manipulative nature of fraternal and sibling relationships with insight and humour although the episodic nature of her scenes suggests a play more than a fluent movie.

The vagaries of actresses' personalities are easy pickings for the playwright but the meaning of Aurelia's rehearsal scenes evaded me. Maura and Dussollier are terrific and there are moments in which Reza's sharp dialogue sparkles but there's not really enough to make Chicas anything more than a slight footnote in an otherwise entertaining career.
