Apple's iMessage in the enterprise

As the enterprise moves to adopt more third-party and internally developed mobile applications, integrated messaging applications on mobile devices continue to remain highly popular. Smartphones are inherently communication devices, but for a device that has its roots in voice communication, a greater portion of user activity is increasingly data driven. Email is the most popular application among business users of smartphones, but there is also strong interest in instant messaging (IM) on smartphones. BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) is highly popular in the enterprise as the messaging application is tightly integrated into Research In Motion's smartphone hardware and its proprietary communication network. In the next few weeks Apple will embed its own proprietary IM software into its iOS 5 software update. We believe that this will have a significant impact on the mobile messaging market, particularly in the enterprise.

What is iMessage?

With the next major version of iOS, Apple will launch an IM service that only runs on Apple mobile devices. This will allow users of iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch to exchange instant messages, communicating one-to-one or in groups, with text or with media and location data. iMessage will run over 3G or Wi-Fi, and will synchronize across multiple iOS devices owned by a single user, allowing a user to start a messaging session on one device, and end it on another. Even as these messages run over mobile operators' 3G networks, there is no cap on the number of messages a user can send, as the data traffic is included in a subscriber's current data plan. iMessage will be integrated with iPhone's current short messaging service (SMS) and media messaging service (MMS) application. When messaging with non-iOS smartphones, iMessage will automatically use SMS and MMS protocols, in effect automatically sparing the user from incurring text messaging costs whenever they're communicating with a fellow iOS user. Texting with an international contact will also be nearly free (if each user is on their home network), as iMessage will circumvent international SMS and MMS rates which run $0.20 to $0.50 per message.
