Cozy up your bedroom sanctuary for chilly winter
As a New Yorker, interior designer Dina Manzo is familiar with the wintertime instinct to crawl into bed at first frost and not emerge until the daffodils bloom. We want to cocoon in a cozy, comfortable nest, and fall is the perfect time to undertake an inexpensive sprucing up for the bedroom.
"It's all about creating a sanctuary for yourself," said Manzo, interior designer and host of HGTV's "Dina's Party." After all, the bedroom is the first thing we see when we open our eyes and the last thing we see at night, she said.
Manzo is a huge advocate of changing the look of a bedroom for the seasons. Keep the comforter a neutral color -- such as burlap, raffia, ivory, black or white -- and you can easily swap out throws and pillows in fall and spring hues. Layer piles of blankets on top for warmth.
"I never cheap out when it comes to bedding," she said.
Ask yourself how you want the room to feel, said Diana Hudson Kresnye, a professional home stylist and owner of Devine Designs in Chesterland. This is the key to making paint and wallpaper selections. A relaxing retreat is going to necessitate different selections than a room where you want an energetic feel, Kresnye said in an email.
"Dressing the walls and windows is the easiest way to make a master bedroom look and feel like a true master bedroom, and to cozy it up for the cold and cloudy Cleveland winter," Kresnye wrote.
We asked Kresnye and two other Northeast Ohio designers for their best tips and ideas for giving bedrooms a great new look for fall:
• Kresnye:
The wall your bed is against is your "focal wall." Consider painting it a couple of shades deeper than the rest of the walls or, since wallpaper is making a comeback, paper just that wall. If you use wallpaper, select a texture (like grass cloth) or a large-scale print that's not too feminine or masculine.
Make this a kids'-free picture zone. There are plenty of other places where you can put photos of your children.
