Bestseller and New Group of Seven Exhibit Spark Interest in Ontario Parks

Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven painted many of their famous landscapes in Ontario Parks. Now, Northern Light, the enduring mystery of Tom Thomson and the woman who loved him, a bestseller by Canadian author Roy MacGregor, and a new art exhibit, Painting Canada: Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, which opens in October at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London, England, have sparked renewed visitor interest in Ontario Parks this fall.

Tom Thomson and members of the Group of Seven often painted at Canoe Lake in Algonquin Provincial Park. This is also where Thomson mysteriously drowned in 1917. The mystery surrounding his death is the central theme of MacGregor’s book and it has fuelled more interest than ever in Algonquin Provincial Park and in Canoe Lake. The Portage Store, which has been outfitting Algonquin paddlers since 1937, has half and full day guided canoe trips to points of interest on Canoe Lake, including the Thomson memorial. The full-day trips run every day except Tuesdays and Thursdays and are priced at $57.95 per adult. http://www.portagestore.com/ On nearby Cache Lake, Bartlett Lodge, one of three lodges in the park, will open its new Lawren Harris and A.Y. Jackson suites this fall. The two suites are part of a historic log cabin once owned by Isabel McLaughlin that was moved to Bartlett and rebuilt. Isabel was a painter and friend of Harris and Jackson. http://www.bartlettlodge.com/

Mazinaw Rock, a Bon Echo Provincial Park landmark, has always attracted painters. 260 aboriginal pictographs are visible on the rock, which rises 100 meters above Mazinaw Lake, one of the deepest in Ontario. Arthur Lismer painted The Sheep’s Nose here in the 1920s. It depicts a part of Mazinaw Rock now known as Turtle Rock and sold last year for $1.1 million. A.J. Casson painted Bon Echo from the tip of a spit that juts out into Mazinaw Lake. From 1910-1928, the Bon Echo Inn operated in present-day Bon Echo Provincial Park. Today, the park visitor centre is housed in one of the original inn cottages. Four new yurts have been added to an existing two in the park this year and a rustic log cabin with a view of Mazinaw Rock can also be reserved for a fall getaway. Canoes, kayaks and paddleboats are available for rent and facilitate access to the Cliff Top Trail on the other side of the lake. Climb the trail for a spectacular view from the top of Mazinaw Rock. http://www.ontarioparks.com/english/bone.

Outdoors: Ruby Mountains offer stunning terrain on recent camping trip

It was just past 6 am, and the sun painted the canyon in color as it made its way down the high rock walls. It's early, but I think this campground could be one of my all-time favorites. It's no KOA -- ice cream socials on the great lawn don't come
