50 years of music on display Monday
It’s hard to carry a career for more than 50 years, just ask Tony Butala.
As the frontman for The Lettermen, the ‘50s vocal group with more than 800 songs and 25 hit singles, Butala knows a thing or two about longevity. Butala admits he didn’t think about hitting the 50-year milestone, at least not at first.
“You don’t think about that,” he said.
That doesn’t change his passion for performing, however. Butala, along with Donovan Tea and Bobby Poynton, will be in Austin this Monday at the Paramount Theatre, giving their all in a 2 1/2 hour show.
Butala promises a real performance, not like artists who simply perform the songs they recorded in studio. The difference between a regular show and The Lettermen, Butala said, is the interactivity in a Lettermen show.
“We’re user friendly,” he said. “I think it’s a very big responsibility and I take it seriously. We want to make it seem like every show we do could be the last show we do.”
The group, formed in 1959, consistently had chart hit singles like “I Only Have Eyes for You,” “The Way You Look Tonight,” and “Come Back Silly Girl.”
They’ll be at the Paramount Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22. Tickets are $50 for VIP seating, which includes a meet and greet mixer after the show with the Lettermen. Regular reserved seating is $25.
