New tower blocks for Woolwich riverside « 853
The last undeveloped section of Woolwich riverside looks finally set to be built upon. Greenwich’s planning board gave permission last night for the completion of the Mast Pond Wharf development on Woolwich Church Street, by the ferry terminal.
Walkers and cyclists who use the Thames Path will be familiar with the two existing towers, which have been in use for five years and are built on stilts because of the lack of flood defences on that stretch of river.
Now they are due to be joined by two more towers, providing 204 homes, a restaurant and office space. Developers will have to allow an archeological dig on the site first, since this land used to be part of the Woolwich royal dockyard.
The board voted 4-2 to allow the development, with Conservatives Dermot Poston and Geoff Brighty voting against because of concerns the towers would block the view of St Mary’s church from the river.
I am not really sure what the thought is about planning in Woolwich. It’s all well and good to have wonderful private sector housing but if it leads to isolation from the main community and does not benefit the town centre it seems a bit pointless. Walking around Woolwich Town Centre is depressing now. I was right about the Game Computer store closure in Powis Street as the unit has been purchased by Deichmann Shoes to integrate with the former Body Shop Unit for trading as one large shoe shop. A planning application has gone in to Greenwich confirming this
I think JD Sports has also closed because it appears to be being stripped out
Wellington Street is a sea of boarded up buildings and it’s now quite intimidating. Add to that the closure of Priceless Shoes, the burnt out Blue Inc and boarded up T Mobile and it seems Woolwich Town Centre continues it’s long decline. Why anyone wants to live in a place that could not even attract the likes of Next which instead goes to Thamesmead is just beyond me.
