How To Make A Corinne Day-Inspired Spiderweb T-Shirt
I was looking through some old Corinne Day editorials, the other day when I came across a picture taken the day model Rosemary Ferguson for the face, in August 1993. The story, called "Dreaming of England," was designed by Melanie Ward and it's pretty much amazing (at least on the basis of the pieces I could find online). But one particular t-shirt in that Ferguson was really attracted me. I could not tell if she was ugly or not, but I enjoyed it. And I wanted to make one.
What was weird for me because everything about a cut-up t-shirt is not what I consider "my style", as much as I wish I could remove (or, you know, means) all the interesting things monochromatic deconstructed by Yamamoto and Margiela and Rick Has I coveted, and spent much of my free time sewing (mostly) imitations of failure in high school, I came to accept these days I'm a plain dress for a vintage day. And I despise the kind of thing full year survival 90, a fashion culture that seems so obviously there just to disguise a lack of new ideas.(Idea freely available to anyone who wants to preempt the fashion industry Wheel of nostalgia: '00s party, where everyone has to dress "bobo" and wear those silky hybrid cargo pants parachute was fashionable to go ankle links in the tip of your pointy high heels, in 2003. And you have to play Chicks on Speed and the Hives, and "Jenny From The Block" until all the guests cry.) Why I love this shirt weird? To me, it has a kind of witchy, Rodarte-FW '08-y-type air.And sometimes it's nice to have things in your closet that say, "I would let you carry me, even if you do not wash their hair or shave your pits in five days." (Sometimes I feel a little, well, judging by my vintage dresses, embodying as they do the esoteric beauty standards of earlier times.) Finally I said why question? Spiderweb t-shirt. Awesome.
ROOK: A Tea Cozy
I don't know what it is about having a girl, but it brings out my urge to sew. I have never been great at it, but it is something that I always want to do more of, so when Leila and I found this great Micheal Miller fabric at Len's Mill Store (a crazy shop where you can buy just about anything!), both of us had to have a yard of it, even with no project in mind. I have always needed a tea cozy, but since I would be sewing without a pattern I felt a little practice would be useful...and since Holly is such a girly-girl I felt she would appreciate a tea cozy of her own! For the pattern, I used a half bowl to trace four pieces and sewed in some craft batt to give it some form. I am pretty happy with it, but it is clear I need to perfect my use of bias tape before attempting my own! As for Holly, once she discovered it wasn't a hat, she was pleased to be able to serve up hot tea just like at Papa's house...
