Munchmobile 2011: Pasta road trip
After another long, laughter-filled, lazy (for everyone but the driver) Munchmobile season, it was time to go to church.
No, really.
Bart's Restaurant, located in the former Trinity Episcopal Church in Matawan, provided a serene, stately backdrop on our quest for quality Italian food, particularly ravioli.
You almost wanted to speak in whispers, or genuflect in front of the penne pasta with lamb ragu, guaranteed to be on my list of top 20 foods all summer.
We went to church, we went to a strip mall, we even went to a hotel on this trip.It’s not what you may think; Bella Piazza, one of six stops, is located inside the Comfort Inn on Route 46 in Fairfield.
“I must have had a cosmic connection with that capellini rabe because pasta in a light broth, as that was, isn’t usually my style,” Muncher Natalie Danna observed.
Cosmic connection? What next, palm reading on the Big Dog?
Throw in two food-obsessed brothers, an Italian restaurant on a turnpike and a visit to what is probably Jersey’s most old-school Italian restaurant, and you have the ingredients for a fun — and filling — pasta road trip.
Going south
What do they say in the restaurant business? Survive the first year and you’re ahead of the game?
Well, Andrea Di Meglio opened Luca’s Ristorante when he was 18 and he’s still at it, 18 years later. The restaurant, sandwiched between Desi Food Galaxy and La Casa de Tortilla in a strip mall on Route 27 in Somerset, is decorated with giant urns, leafy plants and shutters, creating an Italian courtyard look. Di Meglio’s family is from Ischia, an island just off Naples, and while his cooking reflects his southern Italian roots, Di Meglio says he tries “to hit everything on the palette of New Jersey,” with marinara, cream, pesto and other sauces, plus pastas you won’t find at your neighborhood Italian takeout.
