Normality Resumes In Greece: Riot Police Storm Acropolis Protest

The clashes, watched by astonished tourists, erupted when police broke into the grounds of the historic attraction by a side entrance.

The protesters hung on the door, defying repeated orders to clear the entry.

At least 30 government employees had occupied the Acropolis at night barricade themselves in and change the padiock on the main door of the police to keep out.

"A prosecutor has been called and orders were issued to erase them," Deputy Culture Minister Tylemachos Hytiris told the television network based in Athens Skai.

Wielding batons and fired two shots of pepper spray, police pushed the demonstrators away from the entrance and grabbed at least two employees were mounted in handcuffs.

A squadron of police officers remained at the gates, allowing visitors free entry to the monument 2500 years old, the most important major tourist attractions of Greece.

Employees of the Ministry of Culture were protesting against government plans to scrap some 800 short-term contracts by the end of the month. They say they already had 22 months of salary arrears.

Greece is facing a devastating financial crisis that forced the Socialist government to implement drastic austerity measures.

These include more than 9 billion euros (£ 8 billion) in spending cuts in return for 110 billion euros (£ 97bn) bailout.

The package was approved by the International Monetary Fund and the European Union to prevent Europe's first sovereign bankruptcy.

Recurrent protests and social unrest have caused immense damage to the tourism industry of Greece and led the country to an impasse on several occasions.

It is unclear whether the protesters will use additional measures.

Much better. We Americans have been trained and conditioned so that to rebel against the authority is similar to missing a night of prime time TeeVee. God forbid that we should push that, let alone talk back, to those who control. This is simply incomprehensible. These Greeks are so primitive. Pfizer send over a few painkillers and Viagra to recover.
