HIGHWAYMAN: Golden Spike towers over 'Hell on Wheels'

If you were driving on Interstate 80 from Omaha to Denver - a distance of some 550 miles - and are looking to stop somewhere around the halfway point, North Platte would be as close as you could get. In this city into the Platte - a town once known as "Hell on Wheels' - it's 280 miles and 265 miles from Omaha to Denver. Of these 10,000 cars a day, about 3,000 are sorted daily in the yards of the east and west.These sites are nicknamed "hump yards" because they use a bump - a kind of giant mound a pitcher - ranging in height from 20 to 34 feet. An average of four cars per minute are sent gently bumps when they are united with trains going to any of the dozens of destinations. An amazing 8500 locomotives are served per month in the huge repair shops Bailey covering an area the size of three football fields. Crews shop to handle about 300 engines per day. The "single window" service shop car 50 car train per day and replaces 10,000 pairs of wheels per year.Workers can repair up to 20 vehicles per hour, 24 hours a day. So how can a visitor to see such a company as big? Just head for the Golden Spike Tower and Visitor Center on the western edge of the city. The Golden Spike - the name of the "golden point" that united the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads in Promontory, Utah, in 1869 - is an eight-story tower with a view 360 degrees of Bailey Yard and Platte River Valley from a viewing platform, fully enclosed, on the eighth floor. There is also a platform in the open, on the seventh floor.The Golden Spike Tower and Visitor Center opened June 26, 2008. The idea was first conceived in the mid-1990s as a platform for viewing the old Union Pacific fell into ruin. Community leaders wanted to erect a tower that would allow visitors to get a bird's eye view of Bailey Yard.
