Why Danny Green should think twice before seeking a rematch with ...

When former two-division world champion Danny Green climbed into the ring to defend his IBO World Cruiserweight championship against former multi-time Light-Heavyweight world champion Antonio Tarver last month in Sydney, Australia an argument could have been made that there was considerably more pressure on the challenger Tarver than the champion Green. Tarver at forty-two was looking to prove to skeptics that his best days as a fighter were not behind him.

The longtime Light-Heavyweight was making his first appearance in the Cruiserweight division having won only one of his last three contests going into the fight with Green. The victory, a ten round unanimous decision against Nagy Aguilera although convincing did little to quell the critics of Tarver in a fight that was a brief venture into the Heavyweight division. Tarver was also nearly a year removed from that victory over Aguilera.

It would seem that advantages if there were any would be in favor of Green heading into the fight. After all, Green was riding a ten fight winning streak heading into the contest including what some feel is a controversial first round stoppage of the legendary Roy Jones, the longtime rival of Antonio Tarver. This gave Green the credibility in the eyes of some that he would be considered the heavy favorite by fight time. If you add into the equation that this bout was fought in Green’s home country of Australia it was all too easy to assume that the odds were stacked against Tarver.

Unfortunately for Green in many cases nothing is quite as it seems in the Sport of Boxing. Despite Green having a near 80% knockout percentage in his thirty-four fight professional career heading into this bout, stylistically it was frankly a mismatch. Tarver, a crafty southpaw with good hand speed and long arms has the ability to keep his opponents at distance behind a crisp jab and the ability to change angles. If Green were to have any success in this fight he would have to be able to pressure Tarver from the outset and maintain that pressure for virtually the entire length of the contest.
