COUNTY SHOULD REPRIORITIZE S.C. 170 WIDENING

In Joe Croley’s Aug. 5 column, he points out the inappropriate thought process of the Beaufort County Transportation Commission that has yielded a flawed Hurricane Evacuation Route for Sun City.

While nobody doubts the eventual usefulness of widening all of S.C. 170, the prioritization of widening the route going north from Sun City’s

The only thing that is sure about the thought process which created this evacuation plan is that it was developed and passed by a majority of the County Council serving people north of the Broad.

Further exacerbating this issue is a letter sent to the county engineer in January by the Bluffton Transportation Project Manager Karen Jarrett wherein she “strongly” requests that the traffic light currently planned for S.C. 170 at the Sun City Boulevard intersection be moved north to the Del Webb Boulevard intersection. In addition, the letter requests re-configuration of yield lanes and crosswalks to “… provide a refuge for pedestrians as they cross 170.”

Neither suggestion has any merit and, I believe, are politically motivated. The planned traffic light is exactly where it needs to be. There are no pedestrians that cross S.C. 170 between Sun City and Verdier. The only reason to move a traffic light to that location is that someone with a vested interest in Verdier wants a light there and has convinced Bluffton politicians that it is in their best interest to move the light.

We need the County to reprioritize the widening of S.C. 170 to the south rather than the north. We need the town of Bluffton to listen to the common sense coming from Sun City, rather than just say that those 14,000-area residents are outside our town limits and do not count.

Around and around the roundabout

On the other side of the town is another traffic circle built by a developer for over $1 million. It also has its problems. I seriously doubt that it was really needed at the intersection of SC 46 and SC 170. It is the entrance to the Town of Bluffton
