Craft beer is big business in Idaho

Sockeye aspires to be 'Idaho's beer' Brewers Josh King and Lance Chavez have a vision for Dagger Falls IPA, Hell Diver Pale Ale, Powerhouse Porter and more than a dozen other beers they create at Sockeye Grill & Brewery on the Boise Bench.

“Our goal is to be ‘Idaho’s beer,’” King told the Idaho Statesman earlier this year. “I think that title is still out there.”

Unlike the fledgling Payette Brewing Co., Sockeye has been around for a decade and has established a reputation as brewing some of the best beer Boise has to offer. Sockeye’s Dagger Falls IPA has become very popular in the Treasure Valley and comprises about 60 percent of all the brewery’s beer sales.

Sockeye is ripe for expansion, and the brewery’s owner, Fred Schuerman, is seriously considering opening a production-only brewery on the Bench later this year. The Sockeye brain trust’s plan is to build a 20-barrel production brewery at a different location than the restaurant, Schuerman said earlier this year.
